{"id":7997066,"date":"2026-04-10T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/?p=7997066"},"modified":"2026-04-10T06:39:36","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T13:39:36","slug":"issa-rae-hollywood-creator-identity-crisis-dei-rollbacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/industry-news\/business\/issa-rae-hollywood-creator-identity-crisis-dei-rollbacks\/","title":{"rendered":"Issa Rae Slams DEI Rollbacks, Breaks Down Hollywood\u2019s \u2018Identity Crisis\u2019 Over Creators: \u2018It\u2019s Become a Bad Word\u2019 | Video"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p>Before Issa Rae was starring in and showrunning her own TV series or playing President Barbie, her journey started on YouTube.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The multi-hyphenate worked on two web series before starring in her own, making her uniquely qualified to speak to the moment Hollywood finds itself in as the creator economy booms and disruption is rampant \u2014 topics she discussed at length at TheWrap\u2019s Creators x Hollywood Summit on Wednesday in Los Angeles, in partnership with Whalar and The Lighthouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rae knew that mainstream Hollywood in 2011 would never pick up a show like hers, so she decided to commit fully to building her own digital audience with &#8220;Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl.&#8221; This strategy paid off when the show gained popularity organically, reaching its target demo and later receiving additional promotion from YouTube itself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI started \u2018Awkward Black Girl\u2019 because there was a dearth of representation in the industry, and it felt like this was my opportunity to put an archetype into the space that didn&#8217;t exist at the time,\u201d the producer told TheWrap\u2019s Raquel Calhoun, who moderated the \u201cPaving the Way: Creators in Hollywood\u201d panel Wednesday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nIVa9lxkbus?si=X3uLzxTrmcx5Rknr\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; The producer specifically noted that even some executives of color have told her that they \u201ccan&#8217;t cosign you\u201d for fear of losing their own jobs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m seeing it. Just blatantly. People aren\u2019t investing like they were before,\u201d she said. \u201c[DEI] has changed meanings and has become a bad word.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The producer clarified, though, that her production company Hoorae\u2019s mission to tell inclusive stories has not changed \u2013 \u201cand it never will,\u201d she added.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have to be smarter about how you package and market [projects]. You tell them, \u2018It&#8217;s not a show about a Black woman, it&#8217;s a show about class,\u2019\u201d she explained. \u201cAs icky as that might feel, it gets the show sold.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The writer-producer turned her successful YouTube series into a traditional Hollywood career. She said that the biggest asset Hollywood can provide that creators can\u2019t do on their own is marketing on a mass scale.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHollywood has gotten a bit lazier in their discovery, whereas they&#8217;re not reading as much,\u201d she said. \u201cIt&#8217;s been disheartening to see Hollywood not make the extra effort to discover other voices outside of what&#8217;s already been risen to the top as popular.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rae also announced that her production company Hoorae has partnered with TikTok on for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/creative-content\/tv-shows\/issa-rae-microdrama-screen-time-tiktok-partnership-pinedrama\/\">first microdrama series \u201cScreen Time<\/a>.\u201d Together, TikTok and Hoorae will co-develop a slate of additional micro-series that will air exclusively on TikTok and its new microdrama app, PineDrama. \u201cScreen Time\u201d will land on the platforms later this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Screen Time: New Minute Soap Series by HOORAE and TikTok\" width=\"422\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0R8yCXt1xNo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want people to feel like Hoorae is a part of their daily routines and part of their lives,\u201d Rae said. \u201cAnd this feels like an accessible point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>TheWrap\u2019s Creators x Hollywood Summit is an invite-only gathering of the top creators, entertainment leaders and brand partners who are shaping the future of storytelling and the new entertainment economy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>TheWrap\u2019s Creators x Hollywood is presented in partnership with global creator agency Whalar and The Lighthouse, both part of the Whalar Group.
