But increasingly, the opposite is starting to happen. <strong>Major Hollywood players are moving into the creator economy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last Thursday, <strong>Kenya Barris,<\/strong> the creator of shows like ABC\u2019s \u201cBlack-ish\u201d and Netflix\u2019s \u201c#blackAF,\u201d was named <strong>vice chair of Offscript Worldwide\u2019s REVOLT Labs. <\/strong>The new division will be part of REVOLT, the multimedia platform dedicated to the biggest names in hip hop and current events. In his new role, Barris will <strong>lead REVOLT Labs\u2019 creator strategy,<\/strong> helping creators turn their original ideas into scaled shows, movies and live experiences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cREVOLT already had the foundation,\u201d Barris said in a press release. \u201cMy role is to help build the bridge from where creators start to where their ideas can ultimately go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a big get for both REVOLT and the creator economy as a whole. Back in 2018, Barris was one of the showrunners who scored a massive Netflix deal (He later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/kenya-barris-studio-netflix-1234971965\/\">exited the $100 million dea<\/a>l). And&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/creative-content\/tv-shows\/chris-hemsworth-youtube-azza-and-zoc-do-earth-11-million-views\/\">Chris Hemsworth\u2019s<\/a> very first digital series, \u201cAzza and Zoc Do Earth,\u201d<\/strong> launched on YouTube in February and has already scored over 11 million views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even long-established shows and production companies have been taking YouTube more seriously. <strong>\u201cMister Rogers\u2019 Neighborhood\u201d<\/strong> is getting its <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/03\/mister-rogers-neighborhood-youtube-channel-1236760195\/\">first YouTube channel<\/a> ever as Fred Rogers Productions plans to upload episodes and clips to the platform. Pixar premiered a new YouTube show \u2014 aptly titled <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/creative-content\/movies\/the-pixar-show-premiere-new-short-lightbulb\/\">\u201cThe Pixar Show\u201d<\/a> <\/strong>\u2014 earlier this month. And<strong> \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d debuted its YouTube show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dPX_Y7JjALI\">\u201cThe Rundown\u201d<\/a><\/strong> last week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studios and networks experimenting with digital content is nothing new. The difference is the quality of \u201cThe Pixar Show\u201d and \u201cThe Rundown.\u201d These series don\u2019t feel like afterthoughts; they feel like they were created with the same care these companies always infuse into their work (For the record, yes, Pixar\u2019s lightbulb short did make me cry).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years ago, these shows would have been exclusive to streamers and watched by tens of people. Now, people can easily watch them, allowing their fandom to expand beyond a single sketch, show or movie. Yesterday, a <strong>New Mexico jury <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/industry-news\/tech\/meta-new-mexico-social-media-case-found-liable\/\"><strong>found Instagram and Facebook owner Meta liable<\/strong> <\/a>for misleading consumers about the safety risks its platforms pose to children. <strong>Meta has been ordered to pay $375 million.<\/strong> Then today a <strong>LA jury found both&nbsp;Meta and YouTube owner Google liable<\/strong> for causing&nbsp;a woman mental health issues whens she was a minor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The real blow from these trials is the precedent they will likely set. Several companies, including Meta and Google, are at the center of<strong> a flurry of trials claiming their platforms are harmful to children.<\/strong> This isn\u2019t just a U.S.-based concern, by the way. New social media trials and laws have been increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/industry-news\/tech\/social-media-addiction-kids-safeguards-fixes\/\">popping up <strong>all over the world<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark Zuckerberg and Neal Mohan aren&#8217;t the only ones having a bad week. Last Friday, <strong>Elon Musk <\/strong>was found liable for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/media-platforms\/politics\/elon-musk-liable-misleading-twitter-shareholders-tweet\/\">intentionally misleading Twitter shareholders<\/a> <\/strong>when he tweeted the acquisition deal was \u201ctemporarily on hold.\u201d Those three words caused Twitter\u2019s stock to drop 10%, and now Musk may have to pay up to $2.6 billion in damages. Ladies and gentleman, a bad tweet in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TikTok is testing a microdrama feed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TikTok\u2019s microdrama experiments are just beginning. A new feed feature called <strong>TikTok Short Drama is being tested,<\/strong> according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/tiktok-testing-mini-drama-feed-ai-2026-3?utm_source=scalablepod.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=creators-want-their-red-carpet-moment-too&amp;_bhlid=ed40014536cda288cc3dcc698cb80b82688cd6e8\">a report from Business Insider<\/a>. Right now, the offering is only available to a small group of users over the age of 18 in the U.S. and in a handful of other regions. This isn\u2019t the first time TikTok has played around with microdramas. The company launched a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/01\/16\/tiktok-quietly-launches-a-micro-drama-app-called-pinedrama\/\">dedicated microdrama app<\/a> called PineDrama<\/strong> earlier this year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spotify lays off 3% of its podcasting team as part of a company reorg<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-23\/spotify-lays-off-15-people-about-3-of-podcasting-staff?embedded-checkout=true\">Spotify laid off 15 people<\/a> across The Ringer and Spotify Studios<\/strong>, making up about 3% of its podcasting staff. These cuts are part of a company reorganization designed to lead to faster decision making. As part of these cuts, <strong>John Jastremski\u2019s podcast \u201cNew York, New York\u201d <\/strong>was canceled, and The Ringer\u2019s special projects lead Andrew Gruttadaro and staff writer Miles Surrey were let go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of podcasts, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/media-platforms\/tv\/cnn-podcast-style-anderson-cooper-jake-tapper\/\">CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper and Anderson Cooper<\/a><\/strong> were mocked this week for trading their fancy studios for a&nbsp;<strong>low-tech podcasting setup<\/strong>. At <strong>Samsung TV Plus\u2019<\/strong> NewFronts presentation in New York, the company announced\u00a0<strong>an upcoming special from Mark Rober<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCY1kMZp36IQSyNx_9h4mpCg\">74.4 million YouTube subscribers<\/a>). The special will be an exclusive two-hour live event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for<strong> LG,<\/strong> the company announced \u201c<strong>All Chewed Up,\u201d a new FAST channel <\/strong>that will feature new episodes of the cooking and advice talk show \u201cChewed Up.\u201d The podcast stars Clinton Kelly, Carla Hall and Michael Symon, and the channel will have more than 70 episodes of the series from the production company Simple Alien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TikTok partners with Tubi and expands its branded creator opportunities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last Thursday, <strong>Tubi and TikTok <\/strong>announced a new partnership designed to support creators developing original shows called the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/media-platforms\/streaming\/tubi-tiktok-partnership-creatorverse-incubator-program\/\">Creatorverse Incubator program<\/a>.<\/strong> No, I\u2019m not getting a check for that one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll be keeping an eye on the Creatorverse Incubator, but the Tubi partnership wasn\u2019t a major talking point during TikTok\u2019s NewFront presentation on Tuesday.
