Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d continues to dominate awards season, winning the Best Film and Best Director awards at the EE BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drama came into the ceremony with the most nominations, 13, and walked out with the most wins, six. Ryan Coogler\u2019s \u201cSinners,\u201d which is considered the strongest competition for \u201cOne Battle\u201d at the Oscars, won three awards, as did Guillermo del Toro\u2019s \u201cFrankenstein.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chlo\u00e9 Zhao\u2019s \u201cHamnet\u201d earned two awards, while Joachim Trier\u2019s \u201cSentimental Value\u201d and Josh Safdie\u2019s \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d the other Best Film nominees, won one award each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As expected, Anderson won in the Best Director for category. His film also picked up awards for Best Supporting Actor (Sean Penn), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The leading actor and actress categories were wildly different: Robert Aramayo was an upset winner in Best Actor for “I Swear,” a film that has yet to be released in the U.S., while Jessie Buckley won Best Actress after entering the ceremony as a prohibitive favorite for “Hamnet.”<\/p>\n\n\n

Aramayo, who plays a man with Tourette syndrome in the film, also won the audience-voted Rising Star Award over a field that included Chase Infiniti from “One Battle” and Miles Caton from “Sinners.” (John Davidson, the real-life Tourette’s activist that Aramayo plays in the film, was present in the audience and had a couple of involuntary outbursts<\/a> that disrupted the ceremony.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wunmi Mosaku won the supporting actress award for “Sinners,” while Penn was named best supporting actor for “One Battle.” Both awards were mildly surprising, with Teyana Taylor (“One Battle”) considered the supporting actress favorite and Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd (“Sentimental Value”) considered the likeliest supporting actor winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Sinners” won the award for original screenplay, beating a field that included “Sentimental Value” and “The Secret Agent,” two non-English-language films earning rare nominations from a voting body that stuck to films in English in a way that Oscar voters did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“One Battle” beat hometown favorite “Hamnet” in the Best Adapted Screenplay category, though “Hamnet” did win in the Outstanding British Film category, in which it was by far the highest-profile nominee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Sentimental Value” won in the Best Film Not in the English Language category, in which the five nominees were identical to the finalists in the Oscars’ Best International Feature Film category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Mr. Nobody Against Putin” won in the Best Documentary category, while “Boong” was named Best Children’s & Family Film. “Zootopia 2” (titled “Zootropolis 2” in the U.K.) won the award for animated feature, with the juggernaut “KPop Demon Hunters” ineligible because it didn’t have a British theatrical release prior to its Netflix debut.<\/p>\n\n\n

In the below-the-line categories, “One Battle” won for editing and cinematography, “Avatar: Fire and Ash” won for visual effects, “Sinners” won for music, “Frankenstein” won for production design, costume design and makeup and “F1” won for sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I Swear” also scored an upset victory in the casting category over Oscar nominees “One Battle After Another,” “Sinners” and “Marty Supreme.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The show took place at the Southbank Centre\u2019s Royal Festival Hall and was hosted by actor and television host Alan Cumming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As at the Oscars, \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d and \u201cSinners\u201d are the leading nominees, with the former film receiving 14 noms and the latter receiving 13. (The order of finish was reversed at the Oscars, with \u201cSinners\u201d earning a record 16 nominations and \u201cOne Battle\u201d getting 13.) In the acting categories, every Oscar nominee was also nominated by BAFTA with the exception of Wagner Moura, Delroy Lindo, Elle Fanning and Amy Madigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BAFTA is not typically a strong Oscar predictor. In the 78 years since it began in 1949, its Best Film winner has matched the Oscars pick for Best Picture 30 times, with a six-for-six streak between 2009 and 2014 followed by only two matches in the last 11 years. <\/p>\n\n\n

Last year, \u201cConclave\u201d won at BAFTA while \u201cAnora\u201d won at the Oscars. Overall, in the 19 categories shared by both groups (expanded to 20 this year with the Oscars’ addition of a Best Casting category), 12 of the winners matched and seven did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year’s BAFTA Fellowship was awarded to NBCUniversal Entertainment Chairman Donna Langley. \u201cWe are also facing moments of change and disruption today,” she said in her acceptance speech. “And my hope is that those of us who help tell stories for a living continue to find inspiration to make popular art that carries over into people\u2019s everyday lives \u2013 that helps us understand the world a bit better and to see each other a little more clearly\u2026and reminds us that decency <\/em>is a superpower.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ceremony also included a performance of “Golden” from “KPop Demon Hunters,” even though that film was not eligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
