Film Independent has set its dates for the next two iterations of the Independent Spirit Awards, with the event returning to the Hollywood Palladium.

After “Saturday Night Live” alum Ego Nwodim hosted the 41st Film Independent Spirit Awards in February, the next ceremony will take place on March 6, 2027, and again a year later on Feb. 19, 2028.

These dates will place the upcoming Indie Awards one week ahead of the 99th Academy Awards and two weeks ahead of the milestone 100th Oscars.

Typically held in a massive tent on the beach by the Santa Monica Pier, the 2026 Independent Spirit Awards moved inland to Hollywood to make room for Los Angeles’ 2028 Summer Olympics preparation.

“Train Dreams” was the big winner at this year’s Independent Spirit Awards, winning Best Feature, Best Cinematography and Best Director for Clint Bentley. “Adolescence,” meanwhile, won four categories to top its competition in TV — Best New Scripted Series, Best Lead Performance for Stephen Graham, Best Supporting Performance for Erin Doherty and Best Breakthrough Performance for Owen Cooper.

The first-ever Independent Spirit Awards took place on March 3, 1984.

BAFTA Board Apologizes, Sets 3-Step Plan to Ensure ‘Sinners’ N-Word Incident Doesn’t Happen Again https://www.thewrap.com/creative-content/movies/bafta-board-apologizes-sinners-n-word-bbc-next-steps/ Fri, 10 Apr 2026 12:54:58 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7997647 "We apologise unreservedly to the Black community, for whom the racist language used carries real pain, brutality and trauma; to the disability community," the statement reads

]]>
The BAFTA Board of Trustees is implementing a three-point plan to ensure future incidents like the N-word being broadcast at the 2026 EE BAFTAs never happens again.

Following an independent review into February’s 79th British Academy Film Awards, the awards body issued a statement on Friday, apologizing to both the Black and the disability communities for “structural weaknesses” that allowed the disturbance to occur — despite no “evidence of malicious intent” being involved.

“What was supposed to be a moment of celebration was diminished and overshadowed. We have written to those directly impacted on the night to apologise,” the board wrote. BAFTA is also implementing changes “around accessibility and inclusion planning, culture, and event communication and command structure” after admitting organizers did not “adequately anticipate or fully prepare” for the moment.

The update comes two months after “I Swear” subject and EP John Davidson used the N-word against “Sinners” stars Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo while they were presenting. The slur remained in the BBC’s tape-delayed broadcast and even overnight on the iPlayer streamer. However, the broadcaster did catch the Tourette syndrome advocate’s tic against their co-star Wunmi Mosaku within 10 minutes of the first incident, which was edited out.

On Wednesday, BBC’s executive complaints unit similarly deemed the ordeal a “clear breech” of editorial standards, but also noted it was “a genuine mistake.” BBC chief content officer Kate Phillips further stated the team would “learn from our mistakes,” but did not offer an actionable plan going forward.

Read the entire BAFTA Board statement, below:

Following the incident at the 79th British Academy Film Awards, the BAFTA Board commissioned an independent review by RISE Associates to examine what happened and what must change. The review, which is now complete, identified a number of structural weaknesses in BAFTA’s planning, escalation procedures and crisis coordination arrangements. However, it did not find evidence of malicious intent on the part of those involved in delivering the event. We accept its conclusions in full which can be read below.

We apologise unreservedly to the Black community, for whom the racist language used carries real pain, brutality, and trauma; to the disability community, including people with Tourette Syndrome, for whom this incident has led to unfair judgement, stigma, and distress; and to all our members, guests at the ceremony and those watching at home. What was supposed to be a moment of celebration was diminished and overshadowed. We have written to those directly impacted on the night to apologise.

The review is clear that while this was not a failure of intent, BAFTA’s planning and processes have not kept pace with its diversity and inclusion goals. We did not adequately anticipate or fully prepare for the impact of such an incident in a live event environment and as a result our duty of care to everyone at the ceremony and watching at home fell short.

Work is already underway to address the specific areas of improvement recommended in the review to reduce the risk of this happening again, namely around accessibility and inclusion planning, culture, and event communication and command structure.

First, we are improving escalation processes and the chain of information sharing around our Awards ceremonies.

Second, we are strengthening how we plan for and deliver access, inclusion and support at our events to adopt a broader intersectional approach so that the needs and experiences of all are properly considered in advance.

Third, we are addressing any internal cultural gaps or lack of knowledge that may prevent BAFTA from meeting its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion across all our work.

This work continues as a priority with the Executive Team reporting regularly on progress against all actions to the Board of Trustees.

We are determined to learn from what happened, and to ensure inclusion and belonging for all is meaningful in practice as well as in principle.

Pink to Host 2026 Tony Awards https://www.thewrap.com/industry-news/awards/pink-to-host-2026-tony-awards/ Thu, 09 Apr 2026 17:18:53 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7996994 The 79th annual Broadway ceremony will be held on June 7

The post Pink to Host 2026 Tony Awards appeared first on TheWrap.

]]>
The iconic musician Pink has been tapped to host the 79th Annual Tony Awards, set to air on CBS and Paramount+ on Sunday, June 7. This will be Pink’s first time hosting the ceremony, which recognizes the year’s best in Broadway entertainment.

Pink announced the hosting gig through a skit she posted on Instagram on Thursday. In the video, she sneakily steps a single toe onto the stage of “The Great Gatsby Musical” from the wings while the cast takes their bows.

“Now I’ve been on Broadway,” she says. “Now I can host the Tonys.” You can watch the video below.

In the official announcement from the Tonys, Pink shared a more earnest message for her first hosting gig.

“It is the honor of an entire lifetime to host a night celebrating the literal hardest working people in showbiz,” Pink said in a statement. “Broadway has shaped my life and how I put my own shows together – it is a community that is supportive, and inclusive, and full of talent and love. These people give magic every single day, and I cannot wait to celebrate them with the entire world.”

“When I was asked to host the Tonys, I immediately thought, ‘I have to get permission from my daughter.’ I’ve never been on Broadway, and shouldn’t you have to have been on Broadway in order to host? That seems fair and right,” Pink continued. “But when I asked my daughter, she was really excited about being able to have a ticket to go to the Tonys, so I’m hosting the Tonys and I’m really, really excited and very nervous because that girl is a tough crowd!”

Pink hasn’t won a Tony herself, though she does have three Grammys to her name. Two were for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals (one for “Lady Marmalade” with Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim and Mýa in 2002, the other for Imagine” with Herbie Hancock, India.Arie, Seal, Konono Nº1, Jeff Beck and Oumou Sangaré in 2011), while the other was for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance (for “Trouble” in 2004).

“Pink is an extraordinary artist, and her fearless creativity makes her an inspired choice to host this year’s Tony Awards on CBS,” said Mackenzie Mitchell, senior vice president of specials at CBS. “Her dynamic presence and deep respect for live performance will undoubtedly shape a powerful and memorable broadcast that celebrates the remarkable achievements of this Broadway season.”

Pink follows in the hosting footsteps of Cynthia Erivo, who hosted last year’s ceremony, and Ariana DeBose, who hosted the three before that. In 2021, Audra McDonald hosted the proper ceremony, while Leslie Odom Jr. hosted a special “Broadway’s Back!” post-Covid concert.

“Each year, the Tony Awards creates new theater fans around the world, expanding Broadway’s reach and shaping its future,” said Heather Hitchens, president and CEO of the American Theatre Wing, and Jason Laks, president of The Broadway League. “Over the course of her extraordinary career, Pink has built one of the most passionate and enduring fan communities in the history of popular music, giving her a unique ability to bring even more people into this growing family. Simply put: we could not be more excited to get this party started.”

BAFTAs N-Word Incident Deemed a ‘Clear Breach’ of BBC Editorial Standards, but ‘A Genuine Mistake’ https://www.thewrap.com/industry-news/awards/baftas-n-word-sinners-bbc-response-editorial-standards/ Wed, 08 Apr 2026 12:50:13 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7995876 BBC chief content officer Kate Phillips says the broadcaster "must learn from our mistakes" following a report from its executive complaints unit

The BBC’s executive complaints unit has determined that the N-word making it into the 2026 EE BAFTAs broadcast was a serious yet genuine mistake, with chief content officer Kate Phillips saying the broadcaster must “learn from our mistakes” on Wednesday.

“The ECU accepted this was a genuine mistake, especially as the team did correctly identify and edit out a subsequent use of the same word, in line with the protocols that were agreed in advance of the event regarding offensive and unacceptable language,” she said in a statement.

Phillips noted that the ECU “found this should not have made it to air and it was a clear breach of our editorial standards.” However, she reiterated that it was also deemed unintentional, echoing former BBC director-general Tim Davie’s initial explanation of the racial slur.

At the February awards show, “I Swear” subject and EP John Davidson used the N-word against “Sinners” stars Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo while they were presenting. The slur remained in the tape-delayed broadcast and even overnight on the BBC’s iPlayer streamer. However, the team did catch the Tourette syndrome advocate’s tic against their co-star Wunmi Mosaku within 10 minutes of the first incident, which was edited out.

“There was a lack of clarity among the team present at the event as to whether the word was audible on the recording. This resulted in there being a delay before the decision was taken to remove the recording from iPlayer,” Phillips continued. “The ECU has been clear that this was a serious mistake and commented that the fact the unedited version stayed up overnight made the severe impact of the inadvertent inclusion of the n-word worse.”

The CCO further stated the BBC “must learn from our mistakes and ensure our processes are as robust as they can be.”

“The ECU found that the inclusion of the n-word in the broadcast (which was also streamed live on iPlayer) was highly offensive, had no editorial justification and represented a breach of the BBC’s editorial standards, but that the breach was unintentional,” the report stipulated. “The fact that the unedited recording remained available for so long aggravated the offence caused by the inadvertent inclusion of the n-word in the broadcast.”

Actor Awards Set 2027, 2028 Dates at Netflix https://www.thewrap.com/creative-content/movies/actor-awards-set-2027-2028-dates-at-netflix/ Tue, 07 Apr 2026 22:15:00 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7995394 The Producers Guild Awards also set their own dates for the next two years to precede the Actors by one night

The post Actor Awards Set 2027, 2028 Dates at Netflix appeared first on TheWrap.

]]>
Just hours after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced dates for the 99th and 100th Oscars ceremonies, the Actor Awards slated its 2027 and 2028 shows to match.

The 33rd Annual Actor Awards presented by SAG-AFTRA will stream live on Netflix on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2027, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT, according to the streamer. The 34th Annual Actor Awards, meanwhile, will be held on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2028.

Both Actor Awards ceremonies will take place exactly two weeks ahead of the Academy Awards for their respective years. This keeps with the two-week gap between the SAG-AFTRA awards show and the Academy’s ceremony observed in 2026.

The Producers Guild Awards announced their own dates less than an hour after the Actor Awards, with the 2027 PGA Awards taking place on Saturday, Feb. 27, and the 2028 PGA Awards set for Saturday, Feb. 19. This, too, resembles the awards timeline seen in 2026, with the PGA Awards happening one night before the Actor Awards and just over two weeks before the Oscars.

You can find other key dates for the 2027 PGA Awards below.

The 2026 Actor Awards predicted all four acting winners who would take the stage at the 98th Academy Awards, with Michael B. Jordan winning Best Actor for “Sinners,” Jessie Buckley winning Best Actress for “Hamnet,” Sean Penn winning Best Supporting Actor for “One Battle After Another,” and Amy Madigan winning Best Supporting Actress for “Weapons” at both ceremonies.

The Actor Awards gave “Sinners” the top prize for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, which is historically a less-than-reliable precursor for who will win Best Picture. That award at the Oscars eventually went to Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” which bested “Sinners” at most other ceremonies in the lead-up to the Academy Awards.

The Actor Awards marked a major turning point in the Best Actor race for the 2026 awards season. Going into the show, Timothée Chalamet had won Best Actor at both the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Golden Globes (for the Musical/Comedy division, with Wagner Moura winning for Drama), making him the heavy favorite. After he was toppled by Robert Aramayo for “I Swear” (which wasn’t nominated at this year’s Oscars and is eligible for next year) at the BAFTAs, awards season followers wondered whether Chalamet would solidify a lead at the Actor Awards or lose his frontrunner status altogether. Jordan’s win became a major sign that an Oscar was indeed coming his way.

The post Academy Sets 2027 and 2028 Oscars Dates appeared first on TheWrap.

]]>
The Academy Awards, for now, will remain in March.

On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the dates for the final two ceremonies hosted on ABC. The 99th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 14, 2027, while the landmark 100th Oscars ceremony will air on Sunday, March 5, 2028.

This places the 2027 Academy Awards only one day earlier in the calendar than this year’s show, which took place on March 15 — thus dashing the hopes of anyone wanting a shorter season in the new year. The 2028 show will occur during the first week of March, similar to the 2024 Oscars and, before that, the 2018 Oscars.

The Academy likewise announced a series of key dates leading up to the 2027 ceremony. Thursday, Nov. 12, will mark the final submission deadline for General Entry categories, Animated Feature Film, Best Picture and RAISE form, while the Governors Awards will take place on Sunday, Nov. 15.

Preliminary voting begins at 9 a.m. PT on Monday, Dec. 7, and ends at 5 p.m. PT on Friday, Dec. 11, with shortlists announced on Tuesday, Dec. 15. Nomination voting will later begin at 9 a.m. PT on Monday, Jan. 11, 2027, and end at 5 p.m. PT on Friday, Jan. 15, 2027.

The Academy will announce the nominees for the 99th Academy Awards on Thursday, Jan. 21, while the Oscars nominees luncheon will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 16. Lastly, the final voting for the 99th Academy Awards will begin at 9 a.m. PT on Thursday, Feb. 25, and end at 5 p.m. PT on Thursday, March 4.

The Academy didn’t name any dates for the 2028 season outside of the ceremony itself, which will be one week earlier in the new year. The 2028 Academy Awards will be a landmark show for multiple reasons: it’ll be the final ceremony on ABC (which has broadcasted the show since 1976), the final ceremony held at the Dolby Theater (where the Oscars have been held every year since 2002 aside from the COVID-affected 2021 ceremony) and the 100th Academy Awards overall.

Starting with the 101st Academy Awards, YouTube will take over as the program’s broadcaster, hosting the show at L.A. Live’s Peacock Theater (which will go by a different name in 2029, with naming rights currently up for grabs).

The 100th Academy Awards shares the March 5 date with two other iconic ceremonies from the Oscars’ past. The 8th Academy Awards took place on this day in 1936, naming “Mutiny on the Bounty” Best Picture and Bette Davis Best Actress for “Dangerous” a year after her write-in campaign for “Of Human Bondage.” The 78th Academy Awards also shared this date in 2006, infamous crowning “Crash” as the year’s Best Picture over “Brokeback Mountain.”

The 79th Festival de Cannes has selected Pierre Salvadori’s “La Vénus Électrique” — aka “The Electric Kiss” — as its opening night film for 2026.

“Cannes celebrates everything I love about cinema,” the French director shared in a Wednesday statement. “Direction, boldness, freedom and filmmakers. Cannes discovers them, supports them and celebrates them. In its own way, my film embodies all the faith and love I have for my craft. I am so proud and happy that it’s kicking off the Festival!”

“La Vénus électrique” will premiere at the Grand Théâtre Lumière on May 12, shortly after actress Eye Haïdara kicks off the Croisette festivities with the opening ceremony. The film will simultaneously screen at theaters across France.

“Paris, 1928. A young painter in vogue, Antoine Balestro, has been unable to paint since his wife died, much to the despair of his gallery owner, Armand,” reads the logline. “One drunken evening, Antoine tries to contact his wife through a psychic. Unbeknownst to him, he is actually speaking with Suzanne, a humble carnival worker who has sneaked into the trailer to steal food. Suzanne proves to be a gifted fraudster, and, soon aided by Armand, she stages one fake séance after another. Little by little, Antoine regains his inspiration, but the situation gets complicated for Suzanne as she finds herself falling in love with the man she is manipulating…”

This will mark Salvadori’s 11th feature film at the festival in 34 years. He is also known for movies like “Wild Target” (1993), “Priceless” (2006) and “The Trouble With You” (2018).

Elsewhere, Barbra Streisand and Peter Jackson are set to receive Honorary Palme d’Ors from the Palais des Festivals stage on May 23.

The 2026 Cannes Film Festival will run May 12-23, with South Korean director Park Chan-wook as jury president.

Lee Ginsberg is exiting the entertainment public relations firm he co-founded in 2009 to take on a “new phase” in his career as an independent awards consultant, TheWrap has learned.

Ginsberg will step away from Ginsberg/Libby, which he founded with Chris Libby 17 years ago, in mid-April. The firm will retain its name in full after his departure.

“Chris and I built and grew Ginsberg/Libby into something meaningful. I am so grateful for the experiences we shared and proud of all that we have accomplished,” Ginsberg said in a statement. “Following 16 years managing day-to-day operations at a full-service agency, I am stepping into a new phase of this work I care deeply about, and will approach consulting with the same signature care and insight that marked the Ginsberg/Libby brand.”

Once Ginsberg departs, Libby will continue to operate their namesake firm, which has shepherded a number of films on the awards circuit through robust campaigns — including Best Picture winners like “12 Years a Slave,” “Birdman,” “CODA” and “The Shape of Water.” More recently, Ginsberg/Libby mounted campaigns for nominees like “Bugonia” and “Hamnet” (which won Best Actress at the 2026 Academy Awards).

“We celebrate what’s next for Lee,” Libby said in a statement. “Lee and I have been gifted with an uncomplicated, effortless partnership, anchored by shared values and an uncompromising commitment to clients. The staff and I are dedicated to continuing the legacy of all that we have built together.”

Senior staff at Ginsberg/Libby includes Clay Dollarhide, Julie Siegel, Seanna Hore, Robin Finn and Olivia Delgado.
